Getting to Know: Michael Bange

Michael Bange is the Commissioner of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. He was spotlighted in the first quarter edition of the NJUA member newsletter.

Please share a little bit about you.

I grew up on the north end of Elizabeth, the seventh child of Irish immigrants. My family and I have lived in Cranford for more than 20 years.

Please tell us about your position.

I joined the Board of Public Utilities on Jan. 8, 2024. My job is to work with my fellow Commissioners and staff to ensure that safe, adequate, and proper utility services are provided at reasonable, non-discriminatory rates to all members of the public who desire such services. I work to develop and regulate a competitive, economically cost-effective energy policy that promotes responsible growth and clean renewable energy sources while maintaining a high quality of life in New Jersey. I am also Chair of the NARUC Water committee.

How did you get into this field?

At New Jersey American Water, I oversaw the delivery of critical water services for more than 650,000 customers in 24 towns in three counties. I began my career in construction at American Water, installing and repairing water infrastructure, where I gained valuable experience as a utility laborer.

After retiring from a great, 35-year career, where I ended up senior manager of operations, I was asked if I was interested in becoming a BPU commissioner. I was eager to take on the new challenge.

What drew you to working at the BPU?

With my vast knowledge of water utilities, I knew it would be a great fit for me. And it has been.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I look forward to working in low-income communities in New Jersey and providing access to energy assistance plans to help ease the burden of rate hikes. I want to encourage energy efficiency at every turn. I’m most interested in helping people who need help.

How do you relax?

I play golf at the Suburban Golf Course in Union Township.

Favorite Jersey performer?

That would have to be Bruce Springsteen.

Where can you be found on social media?

Call me old fashioned, but I’m not on social media personally. But you can always reach me through the BPU’s website.
